Descriptions listed in alphabetical order according to SESSION title. Some sessions have limited capacity.

  Confirmation of registration will be sent to your base school prior to June 15.         Registration will be between May 12 & May 25.

Brain Injury:  The Hidden Disability in Your School

Brain injuries occur every 23 seconds and are often unnoticed and undiagnosed. This session will give you new insights into this silent epidemic and give you information you need as a professional working with young people. Anne McDonnell, Special Projects Director from Brain Injury Association of VA will present.

Brain/Body Connections!

Physical Education Master Teachers Eric Turrill and Mark Pandau

This session promises participants will come away with new insights into the brain/body connection. The workshop topics include multiple intelligences, teaching styles, learning styles, and exercises and integrated movement activities for the core curriculum. A slide show on brain research developed by three international brain research specialists will also be presented.

COLLABORATION... Meeting the Educational Needs of ALL Learners

The T. C. Walker Team:  Principal Dr. Bambi Thompson, Speech Therapist Jackie James, Classroom Teachers Chris Mattern and Carolyn Molly

TCW's students with disabilities, students receiving Title I Services, and students from diverse backgrounds are all performing well, consistently earning AYP and State Accreditation. TCW knows COLLABORATION is the key to its success. The TCW team will share their own "secrets for success" in the AM for meeting success with "all" students. In the PM session, the team will concentrate on meeting the needs of students with LD, ED, and Asperger's in the general education environment.

Fostering a Culture of High Performance:  Changing Practice by Using Data

NO LONGER OFFERED
Southern Regional Education Board Certified Trainer Harriet K. Dawson Improving student learning by changing classroom and school practices both requires and results in changes to a school's culture. Culture also impacts how and what improvements are made to benefit student learning, and data can be a powerful lever to explore inequity, expose systemic biases and change beliefs and practices needed to improve the achievement of disenfranchised students. Trainer Harriet Dawson will help participants gain analytical tools to uncover the "real" problems that school leaders need to address to close "success gaps" in schools.

Division/School Leadership Teams are encouraged to attend; must attend both days of training. A 3rd day of training will be presented in the Fall 2008.
Functional Behavioral Assessment/Behavioral Intervention Plan School Psychologist Christina Mahoney Participants will be provided knowledge regarding procedures for conduction FBA's (including data collection) and in developing effective behavior intervention plans.

Growing Oysters... and Other Neat Environmental Stuff Environmentalist Shawn Stickler Experience first-hand how to grow oysters and why they are essential to the health of our water systems. Included in the training will be a tour of oyster hatching, boat tour of growing grounds, and historical oyster operations, participation in oyster spawn, and building oyster floats.

Training will take place at 4163 Weems Road; Weems, VA, the site of the oyster houses. Participants wanting to start their own oyster gardens will pay $45... this is optional. Wear appropriate clothing for this training.
 
How Does a Non-English Teacher Grade Writing? Master Teacher Dr. Ron Flowe Many well-intentioned teachers of subjects other than language arts, writing, and English are puzzled about what is important as they read student writing. This workshop will draw attention to writing SOLs. The workshop will also identify other writing problems to improve them. Teachers who are not comfortable with their own writing skills may learn a few things for personal improvement.

How to 'Ruin' Your Curriculum and Have Fun Doing It:  The Rosewell Ruin as an SOL Teaching Resource Rosewell Personnel This 6 - hour program includes presentations on Rosewell as a case study in colonial Virginia plantation life, a tour of the Rosewell ruin site, and practical approaches to teaching this information in the classroom and on field trips. This "field trip" begins at RCC Glenns but participants will travel to Rosewell for tour and other activities. Lunch will be provided.

How to Successfully Teach Algebra I Master Teacher Greg Cartwright Greg Cartwright brings over thirty years of experience to this training with strategies that will lead to the success of your Algebra students. Training will be provided that allows variable amounts of time for students to complete and MASTER the entire Algebra I curriculum.

Improving Middle School Mathematics Programs Lisa Myers Lisa Myers of Simply Achieve, will work with school personnel to examine existing assessment data. This close examination of data will lead to the design of better programs for students. He will share strategies that can be used in any classroom setting to improve achievement levels.

Interactive Reading and Notetaking Amanda Donnelly The Interactive Reading and Notetaking Workshop combines the best reading practices and NCLB endorsed research-based instructional strategies (Marzano) to help teachers raise achievement with ALL children in ALL subject areas and across ALL grade levels. Participants will move the strategies from theory to practices as they create an "interactive textbook" to use as a model in their classrooms.

Information will include recognizing cults and gangs, defining what they are, and strategies educators can use to help students avoid them.

This is a two-day training that will take place at The Menokin Visitors Center in Warsaw, VA.
My Momma Says I'm Brilliant... How are You Going to Teach Me? Ms, Patty Griffin Director of the Chesapeake Bay Governor's School Classroom teachers will explore instructional strategies that can be used in a regular classroom with Gifted Learners. Specific attention will be given to program content, process, and product modification, as well as selection of materials and resources. Participants will leave the session with "make-it, take-it" lesson plans.

Master Teacher and Training Coordinator for Workforce Development Julia Tucker-Lloyd A hallmark of the theory behind writing across the curriculum is that writing is an effective tool in every content area and writing helps students to master every subject by promoting students' general cognitive and intellectual growth. Not only is reading an integral part of the writing experience, but reading across the curriculum is more than reading from course textbooks. Come learn how to make connections, ask the "right" questions, and monitor student progress across the curriculum.
